I am quite interested in portable devices and i follow updates closely. Here is what interests me most about laptops.

Charging Over Type C

This makes the device instantly more portable. You can find Type C chargers everywhere so you don’t have to carry a power brick.

Quiet or Silent

On desktop computers, fans might be far away from you and might not disturb you but that’s not the case in laptops. It’s very close to you and it should be as quiet as possible. If you don’t need much power, i think fanless devices are best.

No HDD

Hard Drives are heavy, makes too much noise and they are slow. Even if you need some storage, you may consider using a cloud service. Laptops are made to be carried but the disks in Hard Drives are prone to be damaged if you move it while it spins.

OLED Display

OLED panels consumes less power than regular IPS or TN panels, they usually have better contrast ratios and generally better suited for a portable device. They are usually quite expensive though.

Little Notes

  • It’s good to have a bright screen so you can see it under sunlight (below 300 nits is not so good, above 400 nits is quite good)
  • You would probably appreciate a bigger touchpad.
  • A bigger screen resolution means more power consumption, bigger is not always better.
  • Keyboard backlight can be useful but not a big deal in my opinion.
  • Being able to open the lid with one hand is good to have.
  • RAM’s clock speed is as important as the size of the RAM.
